WHAT IS PSYCHOPHYSICAL PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Psychophysical physiotherapy is a specialised field of physiotherapy in which patients are approached in a more holistic manner. Psychophysical physiotherapy is based on experiential learning. A person can use insights that have emerged during physical exercises to find new ways of coping and new models for functioning in day-to-day life.
Psychophysical physiotherapy uses e.g. exercises that support movement and awareness of one’s body, work with breathing, and various relaxation exercises. As treatment with the therapy progresses, the experience and recognition of one’s own body and its reactions can develop, and one’s physical understanding of oneself can increase.
HOW DO I ACCESS PSYCHOPHYSICAL PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES?
Psychophysical physiotherapy can be accessed without a referral, or a referral (SV3FM) made by a doctor. In such cases, one will receive a Health Insurance Act-based reimbursement for the treatment. Psychophysical physiotherapy is suitable for rehabilitation services organised by KELA.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PSYCHOPHYSICAL PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Psychophysical physiotherapy can be used to help ease very uncomfortable symptoms, to support patients in recognising their own strength, and increase patients’ control over certain situations. For example, psychophysical physiotherapy can be used to help in building a safe and reliable connection to one’s body, learning to relax, managing pain and stress, regulating loads, and finding alternative ways of moving.
Psychophysical therapy may be recommended in cases of e.g.
- Stress, exhaustion
- Sleep disorders, insomnia
- Prolonged states of pain
- Eating disorders
- Trauma-based symptoms
- Difficulties in basic movement and awareness of one’s body
